As it is known, season 5 of Netflix’s hit series Stranger Things will be the last. The thrilling adventures of characters like Eleven, Hopper, and Dustin will come to an end. The show’s creators, The Duffer Brothers, did announce that their finely crafted universe will continue to exist beyond the original series though. Fans could expect spin-offs, but it was unclear whether they would be a prequel or sequel.
Netflix announced today that we can expect an animated Stranger Things series. Here’s what The Duffer Brothers had to say about it:
“We’ve always dreamed of an animated Stranger Things in the vein of the Saturday morning cartoons that we grew up loving, and to see this dream realized has been absolutely thrilling. We couldn’t be more blown away by what Eric Robles and his team have come up with—the scripts and artwork are incredible, and we can’t wait to share more with you! The adventure continues…”
The Duffer Brothers previously announced that the spin-off(s) would not focus on any of the beloved characters. Therefore, fans wouldn’t have to hope for more screen time for fan favorites like Steve Harrington, Eleven, or Hopper. David Harbour, who plays the gruff chief of police in Hawkins, recently revealed that he felt it was time to move on after five seasons. He is grateful for playing the role of a lifetime but believes it is “definitely time” to stop the series.
“We’ve all grown up. It is time for us to leave that nest and try other things and different projects. And to let the Duffer Brothers try different things as well. I mean, those guys are so talented. I want to see what they come up with next. So it is bittersweet, but it’s definitely time.”
Flying Bark Productions will be responsible for the animation design of the series. The animation studio has Rise of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Marvel’s What If on their resume.
In the first 28 days after its release, season 4 of Stranger Things was watched for a staggering 1.352 billion(!) hours. The series follows a girl with telepathic and psychokinetic powers and her nerdy friends. When an experimentation facility opens a gateway between the normal world and the mysterious alternate dimension Upside Down, inexplicable things begin to happen in the normally calm town of Hawkins.
Season 4 provided more information about the origins of The Upside Down, but much remains unknown. Who knows, the animated series may shed more light on the mysterious dimension.
