Kaitlyn Dever Will Star As Abby In HBO’s The Last Of Us Season 2

The rumor had been circulating for a while, but it’s just become official: Kaitlyn Dever will be taking on the role of Abby in the second season of ‘The Last of Us.’

When I found out that my favorite game, The Last of Us, was getting a television adaptation, two thoughts crossed my mind. One: How incredibly awesome! Two: That poor, brave actress stepping into Abby’s shoes.

Abby, to put it mildly, isn’t the most beloved character in the franchise. Let’s just say her fondness for a round of golf wasn’t shared by everyone. This led to the voice actress of Abby, Laura Bailey, even receiving death threats. I sincerely hope that Kaitlyn is spared from this. But unfortunately, the keyboard warriors on social media have shown time and again that one shouldn’t expect too much from them.

Kaitlyn Dever was previously mentioned as a potential actress for Ellie, leading up to the first season. I also believed she was perfectly suited for the role. She bore a resemblance to the beloved game character and had already proven herself as a top-notch actress. Kaitlyn Dever delivered a most impressive performance in the limited series ‘Unbelievable.’ Portraying Marie Adler, a rape survivor accused of lying about her ordeal, she showcased a remarkable ability to convey emotions, a role that demanded tremendous emotional depth, and she succeeded brilliantly.

Two years later, she delivered a standout performance in ‘Dopesick,’ once again in a compelling dramatic role. Her character, Betsy Mallum, grappled with OxyContin addiction after being prescribed the medication for a severe back injury.

Undoubtedly, Kaitlyn could have brought Ellie’s emotional struggles to life incredibly well. However, fortunately, Bella Ramsey turned out to be a fantastic choice. Like many, I was initially skeptical because she didn’t quite resemble the Ellie I was accustomed to. My doubt vanished in the first episode though. She embodies Ellie’s behavior and mannerisms from the game, and her dynamic with Pedro Pascal as Joel is a pleasure to watch.

So, adding Kaitlyn Dever to The Last of Us cast is a great detour. I’m eagerly anticipating what the actress will bring to the table. Her arrival is unfortunately tied to something I’m less excited about. But well, we still have to wait until 2025. Enough time to emotionally and mentally prepare ourselves, right?
