Writer Charlie Brooker is once again responsible for coming up with undoubtedly dark and unsettling scenarios that could be lurking in the near future.

Each episode of Black Mirror features a completely different cast and storyline, so they don’t need to be watched in a particular order. The only thing that’s consistent is the theme. The episodes focuses on a potential technological invention that could significantly alter our lives in the near future (usually for the bad). For example, a technology that records our entire lives, which you can watch back at any time (quite handy when you’re having a discussion with your partner about something you may or may not have said).

Another episode shows how a teenager is blackmailed by a hacker to participate in criminal activities to protect his secret. The episodes often make viewers think and warn us about the dangers of rapid technological development. Due to the heavy theme, viewers often indicate that they do not find this series particularly ‘bingeable’ and need some time to recover after an episode.

A Different Approach

Black Mirror Season 6 - Aaron Paul

Regarding what we can expect from the sixth season, Charlie Brooker has stated:

“I’ve always felt that Black Mirror should feature stories that are entirely distinct from one another, and keep surprising people (and myself) or else what’s the point? It should be a series that can’t be easily defined, and can keep reinventing itself.

“So partly as a challenge, and partly to keep things fresh for both me and the viewer, I began this season by deliberately upending some of my own core assumptions about what to expect. Consequently, this time, alongside some of the more familiar ‘Black Mirror’ tropes we’ve also got a few new elements, including some I’ve previously sworn blind the show would never do, to stretch the parameters of what ‘a Black Mirror episode’ even is.”

We don’t have to worry that the wheel will be completely overturned though. The writer indicates that it will still be “tonally ‘Black Mirror’ through-and-through”, but with more variety.

“And bringing it all to life we’ve got an incredible roster of disgustingly skilful, smart directors working with a cast of actors so talented they frankly have no right to exist. I can’t wait for people to binge their way through it all and hope they enjoy it – especially the bits they shouldn’t.”

According to the logline, the sixth season will be the most unpredictable, unclassifiable, and unexpected yet. Of course, they can’t exactly say that this will be the most boring and predictable season ever. So let’s see for ourselves in June.

Here’s a teaser that was also released today. There are plenty of gruesome images to come by the looks of it!
